Wilf Ball (September 2008)
Former BRUFMA Chief Executive Wilf Ball, 74, and his friend Glyn Rowlands, 67, all their lives had the ambition to complete the journey from Land’s End to John O'Groats on bikes. Both thought they would be able to do this when they retired but unfortunately in 2004 Wilf, who has always been a keen tennis and squash player, suffered a blocked coronary artery. This left him unable to walk more than 150 yards without needing to rest. Following treatment at Wythenshawe Hospital Heart unit, their ambition was realised when during the Summer they completed the 874 mile ride in just over three weeks raising £420 for the Wythenshawe Hospital Heart Unit on their way. Wilf has now also returned to playing squash and tennis several times a week!
